PE Collective Weekly – OpenAI DevDay, Meta Expands Open Source Partnerships, & Google Expands Anthropic Partnership

3–4 minutes

Hey everyone, we have a quick summary of OpenAI’s DevDay, Meta partners with Hugging Face & Scaleway, Anthropic is deploying Google’s TPUs at scale, and we have several new tools that members shared.

OpenAI DevDay Announcements

OpenAI’s first developer conference was this week. You can watch the video here, and Goda Go made a great 1 minute summary as well.

  • Launched GPT-4 Turbo, a new model that addresses developer feedback and offers improvements such as longer context length, more control over model responses, better world knowledge through retrieval capabilities, support for new modalities like vision and text-to-speech, customization options through fine-tuning and custom models, increased rate limits, and copyright shield for legal protection.
  • Introduced GPTs, tailored versions of ChatGPT for specific purposes, which combine instructions, expanded knowledge, and actions to make them more helpful and personalized.
    • Introduced the GPT Store, where GPTs can be listed and shared publicly, with revenue sharing for creators.
    • Showcased examples of GPTs built by partners, including Code.org, Canva, and Zapier.
  • Launched the Assistants API, which includes features like persistent threads, built-in retrieval, code interpreter, and improved function calling, making it easier to build assisted experiences in apps.
  • Deepened their partnership with Microsoft, focusing on infrastructure development and product integration.

How will the rest of the ecosystem be impacted by these announcements? That would take up an entire article. Thankfully, Sahar Mor helped visualize which companies would be effected by these announcements.

Those impacts will only get more pronounced over time. Sam Altman wrapped up the conference by saying “We hope that you’ll come back next year. What we launch today is going to look very quaint relative to what we’re busy creating for you now.”

Meta Boosts Open Source Development Through New Startup Accelerator

Meta announced a partnership with Hugging Face & Scaleway today, with the goal of accelerating open source AI solutions within the French entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Amidst a global call for tighter AI regulations, Meta is advocating for an open-source approach, contrasting the closed development model preferred by many of their big-tech peers. This move aligns with Meta’s open-sourcing of its AI models and Hugging Face’s commitment to providing open alternatives to proprietary AI solutions.

The program, accepting applications until December 1, 2023, will mentor startups focused on integrating open foundation models into their offerings, leveraging Meta’s expertise, Hugging Face’s tools, and Scaleway’s resources.

Anthropic Deploying Google TPUs at Scale with Expanded Partnership

Anthropic has become one of the first companies to deploy at scale TPU v5e—Google Cloud’s most versatile, efficient, and scalable AI accelerator to date. Their expanded partnership focuses on AI safety standards and security measures, while harnessing Google’s cutting-edge Cloud TPU v5e chips for efficient AI inference.

Google’s TPUs could be a competitive advantage in the AI race. They can work quicker than GPUs while using fewer resources, and it makes them less dependent on GPU powerhouse Nvidia.

Notice how even OpenAI had “Look for GPUs” blocked multiple times on their calendar during this week’s DevDay. If OpenAI has this problem, what does that mean for smaller startups 🤔?

Member Tools & Resources

Huge thank you to Everett, who shared several of his most helpful tools this week. Quick reminder, all tools that members share on Slack will be memorialized in the “Tools & Resources” section of our site.
